Providing the right nutrition for the poor in India is essential to combat malnutrition and improve public health. Malnutrition remains a significant issue, with over 35% of children under five suffering from stunting and 17% from wasting, according to the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5).
The Indian government has launched several programs to address nutritional deficiencies. The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) provides supplementary nutrition, health check-ups, and immunizations for children under six and pregnant or lactating mothers. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme ensures that children in government and government-aided schools receive nutritious meals, boosting both education and health outcomes. The Public Distribution System (PDS) supplies subsidized food grains to low-income families. Reforms to improve its efficiency and ensure the distribution of nutrient-rich foods are ongoing.
However, the size and scale of the challenge requires every capable resource to chip in and this is where non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a crucial role in providing nutrition education, distributing fortified foods, and supporting community-based nutrition programs. Organizations like Akshaya Patra , The Hunger Project and the Red Heart Foundation work towards alleviating hunger and malnutrition through various initiatives ranging from helping people create self sustaining hunger alleviating projects to simpler meal sponsorship programs and everything in between.
